"Possibly the greatest literary enigma in history, the Synoptic Problem has fascinated generations of scholars who have puzzled over the agreements, the disagreements, the variations and the peculiarities of the relationship between the first three of our canonical Gospels." "Yet the Synoptic Problem remains inaccessible to students, who are often soon tangled up in its apparent complexities. But now Goodacre offers a way through the maze, with the promise of emergence at the end, explaining in a lively and refreshing style what study of the Synoptic Problem involves, why it is important and how it might be solved. This is a readable, balanced and up-to-date guide, ideal for undergraduate students and the general reader."--BOOK JACKET

In this book, Goodacre simplifies the complex issues involved in engaging with the problem associated with a "together look" at the first three gospels
...
in our New Testament bibles. He makes a compelling argument for how to best grapple with the literary relationship that exists between them. He not only makes clear the origins behind modern research on the synoptic problem, but also shows how the popular two source theory and the lost document known as "Q" is problematic for students, as it fails to enrich our insight into the literary relation between the gospels. The similarities and differences can be easily seen by what Goodacre calls the double and triple tradition, the similar wording and order that two or three gospels share in common. Such a study is of immense importance as it precedes and aids other theological questions and insights into the importance of understanding the gospel evangelists in their own right and our insight into understanding Jesus in history.
